Three copies of a book titled “After the Coal Dust” with a black-and-white cover image of a person walking down a dirt track, displayed on a dark wooden surface.

A new A5 edition of the After the Coal Dust Book

The original After the Coal Dust book came out in 2020 in 12in and 8in hardback editions and we were fortunate enough to be able to offer these editions at reasonable prices. Unfortunately the original editions are now out of print but a revised hardback version is available at The Great British Bookshop and other online retailers.

However, the cost of hardcover books has increased since the original editions. We are pleased however, to announce we have a new A5 size softcover edition available. It contains the full 130 page content from the earlier editions at a more affordable price. The intention is to offer these for sale when I do the in-person talks so this edition isn’t going to be available from anywhere other than direct from me at the talks or from this website.

The price is £10 at the talks or £12.50 including postage in the UK if ordered from this website. I’ve a few signed copies available at the same price if anyone is interested. There’s limited numbers available currently until I assess the level of interest.

The book features photographs by Bridget and myself as well as several short essays on photography and can be purchased using the options below.

I can only recommend the book to everyone. “After the Coal Dust” captures moments in time.
Every picture tells a story. Any photo is absolutely complete.
This is not an easy task for any photographer. The Gills’ unique book is not about despair, but about survival, an acceptance and emotional understanding. You take your time with each page and soak in the lights and shadows of the scene in front of you.
Perhaps as a photographer you wish you could have captured this picture. In fact, this is one of the best photo books to ever come out. An excellent production: the beautiful images have been carefully edited and thoughtfully selected.

2023 Special Edition

It’s possible that a similar edition of the ‘RETRO‘ book will appear at some point. Retro is 300 pages however so it depends very much on whether we can offer it at a reasonable price. The hardcover version is of course still available online.
