RETRO is a 300-page retrospective, published in November 2024, gathering work from the 1980s through to 2024. It is the widest-ranging of my books – street photography alongside landscapes, colour work and personal projects, with written pieces running throughout.

What’s inside
The book is arranged in themed sections rather than strict chronology, and each section opens with my own thoughts on the subject – why I photographed it, and what I make of it now. It runs from the earliest work through the streets, markets and car boot sales around Castleford, and on to the 100 Faces portrait project.
There is a good deal here that people who know the earlier books will not have seen: a body of colour work, landscapes from around Yorkshire and the coast, some experiments that frankly did not come off, and a personal account of my own struggle with mental health, told through the photographs.

What people have said
The book is divided into themed sections, each prefaced by John’s thoughts on the subject. Like his photography, his musings are refreshingly frank and honest.
